Kip, Harris, Knyff
Joannes Kip (1653-1722)
Fine copper plate engravings from :
"Britannia Illustrata or Views of several of the royal palaces as also of the principal seats of the nobility and gentry of Great Britain elegantly engraved on copper plates........" first published in London c1708-9 with engravings by Kip after original drawings by Kip himself and fellow Dutchman Leonard Knyff
and
"The History of Kent" by John Harris published in 1719, with engravings by Kip and Harris after original drawings by Thomas Badeslade.
Kip was a native of Amsterdam who had worked for William of Orange in Holland. He followed William and Mary to England when they succeeded to the English throne in 1689 and settled in Westminster. His many fine engravings for Britannia Illustrata, Harris's History of Kent and Robert Atkyns History of Gloucestershire are a superb record of not only the country houses but the parks and formal gardens that surround them.
